Deciding how many bridesmaids you should have is not always an easy task. It’s up there with choosing exactly who you should have as your bridesmaids!
Choosing bridesmaids is a little like being captain of a sports team, and trying to decide who should feature in your squad. The pressure can be challenging. But be aware that just because you have numerous friends, and a large family, it doesn’t mean they all have to be by your side on the big day. There are so many other ways that everyone can be involved in.

If you’re currently struggling to decide on how many bridesmaids you should have, try to remember these simple rules.
Don’t you just love that! When you’re looking for an easy answer, and someone says, ‘there’s no correct answer’. But in this case, it’s true. Your wedding doesn’t require a certain number of bridesmaids. You don’t have to choose an odd, even or round number of ‘maids to be correct. You just have to choose how many bridesmaids feels right for you, and the occasion.
You also don’t need to have a matching number of bridesmaids to groomsmen. The only time anyone might notice that one side has less than the other, is when it’s time for them to walk down the aisle. But your guests are really not going to be paying that much attention to it anyway. They’ll be sitting there fidgeting in anticipation, waiting for you to walk down the aisle!
If you feel like the groups may look uneven in the photos, ask the photographer to work out different setups and poses that’ll make the numbers feel more balanced. That way, it’s not just a straight line of people standing beside one another.

There’s no rule that states you have to select your bridesmaids based on who asked you to be a part of their bridal party. You also definitely don’t have to extend the invite to someone just because you stood by their side some years ago. If you’re still close with them, go for it! But if you haven’t spoken in a few years (or more) it’s going to be a little weird rekindling your friendship in the midst of wedding planning.
You don’t have to have any bridesmaids at all. Even without an official ‘bride tribe’ you can still have a banging hen party and invite all your best girls, and boys. Who may even be happier in the long run, seeing as you saved them from having to organise wedding stuff. Or, do you have a guy in your life that you can’t imagine leaving out? By all means, ask him to join your bridal party along with the rest of the ‘maids!
Just like the bridesmaid dresses they wear, the types of bridesmaid come in all different shapes, sizes and with a whole range of personalities.

When it comes to picking your bridal squad, it’s likely that your select group of very important girls will consist of a bunch of different personalities! Girls who you’ve known all your life as placid and calm can suddenly morph into total divas when faced with wedding preparation. Equally, the bridesmaids you thought would never be interested in bouquets could also become expert florists overnight!
No matter how many weddings you’ve been to or how many times you’ve been a part of the wedding party, you can start to notice that there are a few types of bridesmaid you’ll find at every single wedding celebration. From the single and ready to mingle bridesmaid to the one who always seems to be running late, here are the 12 types of bridesmaid you’ll find at every wedding. But which ones are in your squad?!

No wedding party would be complete without this band of special ladies.
From timelines and spreadsheets to checklists and group chats, the organised one is the type of bridesmaid always on hand to keep everyone in agreement and make sure everything is going to plan. She’s a great asset to have, especially when it comes to the wedding day itself – she’ll give your wedding co-ordinator a run for her money.
This is the bridesmaid whose night is never over. She is the lovable crazy lady in your squad who can guarantee a hen party to remember, if you can! No relaxed spa day for her, she’s already got connections at the best bars in Ibiza, and she’s on first name terms with all the promoters. Look to her when you want the reception dance floor filled. Just make sure you have someone sensible keeping an eye on her…
We all have that one friend who is a bit of a control freak, you don’t? It might be you… The control freak bridesmaid can come in handy if you’re a pretty laid-back bride and need someone to pick up the slack. But if you’re hands-on, just make sure to keep her busy and give her a responsibility – that way she’s satisfied that her job is done correctly.

From the very moment you gave her the news that you were engaged, she has been in floods. If you’re looking around your reception during your speech and can’t find anyone tearing up at the emotional bit, look to her, she’ll be sobbing on your Mum’s shoulder. She loves you and she just can’t control it, what a cutie.
Whether you met at nursery or you held her hair back through years of university, this bridesmaid is the one who knows you the best. Her opinion is always priceless. If everything gets too much before, after or during your big day, this type of bridesmaid will make any stress disappear.
This girl is an expert, she’s been a bridesmaid more times than you’ve had wedding cake tastings, and she knows what’s what. She’ll make the perfect maid, using her vast experience to guide the other girls through the challenges ahead!

Too much positivity can be a little annoying sometimes (we are English after all!), but having a bridesmaid who is always happy about everything can really help to balance out any of the less enthusiastic members of your group. They’ll be sure to remind everyone just how special and fun it is to be a bridesmaid.
It doesn’t matter if it’s your ceremony rehearsal or that infamous first day at her new job, this bridesmaid always has an issue with turning up on time. But when she does show up, she brings the party, and she’s the most fun to be around. To solve the problem of lateness, just make sure you always give her a false start-time for bridesmaid duties, so when she turns up ‘late’, she’s actually on time. Pretty good right?! Again, if you don’t know what we’re talking about, it’s probably you.
We’ve all been there. It’s unfortunate, however, this bridesmaid has had her heart broken whilst you are planning your wedding. As hard as it sounds and as hard as it is, you can’t let that stop you from enjoying your big day. Her future loved-up self wouldn’t want that anyway. Just make sure the other bridesmaids keep her away from the single groomsmen!
Having a fashionista as one of your best girls is good because she knows what’s hot and what’s not, but that also means they may be a bit feisty when it comes to their outfit choice. Make sure she is heavily involved in your bridesmaid choices and remember these days it’s OK to mix and match, so let her choose a dress she loves! I mean, that’s guaranteed a Nabbd anyway but still!
In the middle of trying on your wedding dress ready to show to the girls, you’ll spot this type of bridesmaid with her phone out angling to get a selfie with you in the background! She can’t stop herself! But her (many) pictures will make for some amazing mementos & guaranteed love on Instagram.
You’ll have to thank this type of bridesmaid so much when the wedding is over. When you need space, she gives you space, when you need help, she helps, when you need wine, she brings you wine – she just knows it all and does everything with a smile!
It takes all sorts to make a world, and it takes all types of bridesmaid to make a wedding! And we wouldn’t have it any other way!

Hi NABBD team
Just wanted to say a huge thank you for all your help sourcing our bridesmaids and flower girl dress. Your whole team were super helpful throughout and we had so many compliments on the dresses – turns out sage green and whipped apricot go very well together!
Once the bride or the bride’s squad have gotten an idea of the style, fabric, and colour they want for their gowns — it’s time to book a bridesmaid dress fitting! And we cannot wait for you to arrive! But before you brush off the cold, and enter our cosy bridesmaid studio, cuppa in hand. There are a few things to keep in mind if you are to get the most out of your pre-wedding experience.
Simple steps you and your girls should take that’ll ensure you find the best bridesmaid dresses for the big day.

You may well need multiple bridesmaid dress fitting appointments, but with our handy tips, you’ll stride into every one like a seasoned pro.
If you’re at a loss about what to wear to a bridesmaid dress fitting, start with the basics, underwear. Aim to wear the exact, or at least a similar style of undergarments to your bridesmaid fitting as you plan to wear on the wedding day.
As it’s difficult to know how certain dresses will fit, bring along a couple of different bra options, especially a strapless version, to see which one is the most comfortable and works best with your dress. Keep it understated and simple by sticking to seamless styles and nude tones, as (practically) nobody will want to see your leopard-print bra sticking out. If the gown has a low or open back, it may have cups sewn in, but bringing along bra variations will still be helpful.

The bride may well ask you to pick out a special pair of shoes that’ll suit the style theme, or colour of the celebration, but for now, bring a few different shoe options to your bridesmaid fitting. Try to find shoes with a similar heel height to the ones you might wear on the big day, as this will determine the length of the gown. How much hemming needs to be done or, if you’re a bit taller, whether you’ll need extra length added to the dress. These things are all affected by heel height.
Not bringing a pair of shoes the same height as the ones you’re planning to wear can disrupt the fitting/s, as the seamstress won’t know what they are working towards.
On the big day, you’ll be looking your very best, wearing an amount of makeup that makes you feel good, and having had your hair done probably by a professional. Keep this in mind when attending your bridesmaid dress fitting.
You’re certainly less likely to love the dress if you’ve just rolled out of bed and shown up for the fitting. Feeling a mess. We’ve all experienced trying on an outfit before going out, and it just not looking or feeling right before we put our shoes on, and have done our hair, the same applies. You’ll be in a lot more responsive state of mind and feel happier with yourself if you get ready ‘to go out’ to attend a bridesmaid fitting.

If the bride has gifted the bridal party with jewellery she wants her squad to wear on the big day, or if she has a specific vision for earrings, necklaces etc – bring the appropriate accessories to your bridesmaid dress fitting. It’ll help you visualize the full ensemble.
The other benefit is that the bride-to-be will be ecstatic knowing you’re on board with her bridesmaid accessory choices. Send selfies of the full look, jewellery and all, to get her seal of approval and earn massive bridesmaid brownie points!
Planning on wearing your hair up at the wedding? Bring a hair tie or clip to get a better idea of what the bridesmaid dress will look like paired with an up-do. This will also give you a better feel for how the neckline and the back of your gown will look on the day.
If the bride is present during the bridesmaid dress fitting, keep things positive. Even if you’re not madly in love with the dress you’re wearing (impossible at Nabbd btw!), consider the brides’ feelings first. Go in with an open mind and knowledge that you can add your own splash of personality to the dress with makeup, accessories & sass!
“I wanted to write and thank you again for the great experience I had in selecting and buying dresses for my bridesmaids, for my wedding in June. I got married on the 23rd, in Wadhurst castle, and my bridesmaids and maid of honour all looked stunning in their dresses. Here is a photos to show how beautifully they turned out.” Photographer Fiona Kelly (@fionakellyphoto)
“Just wanted to share some of the photos taken by our photographer as they really were gorgeous dresses!”
Thank you so much again for everything! It was the most amazing experience – you all made it so special.

You’d think that choosing bridesmaids would be easy, right? Not always… Some brides find it to be an incredibly difficult decision to make. After all, bridesmaids play a massive role in the day, and their energy is often what fuels the vibe of the wedding party. Therefore, it’s important to select individuals who’ll create the kind of big day feeling you desire.
Right off the bat, our advice, don’t rush the decision-making process. Your wedding day is a momentous occasion, one that deserves careful thought in every area. Especially when it comes to the loved ones who’ll take a front-row seat during proceedings.

What is the best way to choose bridesmaids? And how do you get past the tricky, icky, messy parts? Here are our tips to help you make the right decision, without too much drama!
The best way to start is to give yourself a target number. Choose how many bridesmaids you want to have with you on the day. The total may change over time, and that’s ok, but it’s good to begin with a figure in mind.
Whether it’s two bridesmaids, or ten, the total should be reflective of your personal preference. Are you someone who enjoys being surrounded by a large group of friends? Or do you usually prefer things to be more intimate, 1 on 1 even? Consider how you typically feel in social situations, and that should help you dictate group-size.
This is your decision. Don’t allow yourself to be rushed into choosing bridesmaids, or let anyone pressure your selection.
If you’re constantly asked about it, just tell people you haven’t made up your mind yet. But be firm. And don’t ask someone to be your bridesmaid just because they’ve put you on the spot! It may feel awkward, in the moment, to tell someone no, but in the long run you’ll be glad you stood strong. Not asking someone to be a bridesmaid when they were expecting you to can hurt relationships. But at the end of the day, it’s your wedding, and if they don’t understand that, maybe your decision not to choose them is even more justified.
Make the right decision now, and you’ll save a lot of trouble further down the line. So, please, no sudden proposals without careful thought!

If you’ve got sisters you’re close to, you’ve got a ready-made bridal party. But that doesn’t mean you can’t bring in friends to the group. Or your future sister-in-law or a friend on your partner’s side of the family, that can be a great choice too. Just don’t do it out of obligation!
When it comes to friends, consider picking ones you’ve had a long-term friendship with, rather than someone new on the scene. A lot of us don’t see our childhood friends as often as we’d like, but when we do, it’s like nothing has ever changed! Keep that in mind before you discount them over your exciting new mate from padel!
On the flip side, don’t feel obliged to pick childhood friends as bridesmaids just because you have history. It may well that your more recent friends now know you better than those you grew up with. And are less likely to share any gruesome stories from your younger years!
Stay true to what you believe in.
It’s impossible to please everyone, and you’ll undoubtably hurt some feelings during the decision process. But if you have a good reason for not asking someone to be your bridesmaid, all you need to do is communicate that.
These days, it’s extremely common to have male friends as brides-men, and vice versa as groomsmen. If a mixed group of genders is reflective of your social group, and you find having male, or non-binary energy around you comforting. Then you should surround yourself with those who make you happy on your big day!
Once you’ve settled on your squad, decide who will take the lead role as maid of honour. This can feel like an obvious, easy decision to make. But before simply selecting your best friend, or sister for the role. Consider the responsibilities that come along with the position. Jobs like directing the bridesmaids, hosting the hen party, organising friends and family, giving a speech. Can you imagine your best mate doing, and succeeding at all of those things?
Your maid of honour should be sensible, practical, and organised… While also knowing how to throw the best hen party ever!
Being a bridesmaid is an honour and an opportunity to make lifelong memories with your mates. Whether you are chosen by a BFF, sister, or relative, you are essential in forming a support network for the bride and helping her plan her big day. But there’s more to bridesmaid duties than just looking stunning and being a shoulder to cry on!
Not all bridesmaid duties are attractive, but are essential to the smooth running of celebrations. To ensure you’re 100% ready for the big day, we’ve put together some top tips for being the best bridesmaid. Advice that should help score you some ‘maid points and make your bride the happiest there has ever been.

You’ll need to go bridal and bridesmaid shopping with the bride, and it’s likely this is one of the duties you’re most excited about. What colour will your look be? What style will the bridesmaids wear? It’s so much fun! Go wedding dress shopping is pretty great too!
The maid of honour’s role involves helping to arrange a day when everyone can get together to try bridesmaids dresses on. Try to be flexible, particularly when there’s a big group to organise.
Remember that it can be hard to dress and coordinate everyone at once, so if you have any concerns, address them calmly as soon as possible. Help the bride achieve her vision, and keep in mind that she always has the final word.
More importantly, you should make sure that you establish with the bride, from the beginning, who will pay for the gowns. Make sure you include any extras such as accessories, hair, and makeup, too.
Traditionally, the bride pays for what she wants the bridesmaids to wear, but this isn’t always the case, so make sure everyone’s on the same page to avoid any awkwardness.
Bridesmaids are often expected to help the bride with different parts of the wedding planning process. With different tasks handed out according to individual skills and talents.
If you’re good at crafts, the bridesmaids might ask you to help them with DIY wedding gifts, while those with a talent for design might be asked to lend a hand with stationery. There’s also RSVPs that need to be chased, menu options to be organised, and issues with wedding suppliers to be fixed.
Be prepared to help with any wedding admin – and do so with a smile. It’s all part of being a bridesmaid!

The maid of honour is usually in charge of organizing the hen party, but they may assign other tasks to you to help out. Prepare ideas to help the maid of honour plan the perfect day, and consider what things you can do to help with the hen do planning.
One bridesmaid could gather some hen party challenges for everyone to try, while others could contact the groom to get the Mr and Mrs Quiz answers – a hen party essential!
Games offer a great way of breaking the ice if you have a large group of bridesmaids who don’t all know each other well.
If you aren’t already with the bride on the morning of the wedding, go over to her hotel and assist her in getting ready. While the maid of honour attends to the bride, the adult bridesmaids can assist any younger bridesmaids and flower girls.
Bridesmaids typically travel to the wedding ceremony with the maid of honour and the bride’s mother, leaving the bride to travel with her father. The bridesmaids should arrive ten minutes before the bride so that they can see her arrive.

During the wedding reception, the bridesmaids should be available to assist with anything the bride may need. From makeup touch-ups, to assistance going to the bathroom, and taking charge of the emergency bag.
Keep an eye out to make sure the bride has something to drink (non-booze) and has eaten properly as the evening progresses.
You’re engaged! This is huge! Congrats! We’re so happy for you! And you are both going to have an incredible time planning your wedding day over the next 12 or so months. From choosing the prettiest bouquets and cake, to picking your dream dress and bridesmaids – it’s going to be a whirlwind! So, it’s important that from 2024 you stay on track, and keep an engagement timeline. Otherwise, your best intentions could go flying out the window!

To help your big day plans go as smoothly as possible, we thought we’d share our top tips for newly engaged couples. Bite-size pieces of wedding planning cake that will help to make the process more manageable, and more fun for you and your bridesmaids.
How are most people going to hear about your engagement? Social media. And how will you tell people that you’re engaged? By showing your engagement ring! Now, how’s it going to look if you share an image of your ring finger with cracked nail polish, or chipped ends? It’s going to look awful. Even if you don’t think so now, trust us, in 5–10 years time you’ll wish you’d got a manicure.
This engagement ring selfie is probably going to be the biggest thing you’ve posted on Instagram to date. So make sure it’s precisely how you want it. A relaxed, loving shot of you and your partner is what we’re going for.
Once you’ve shared it with your adoring fans, WhatsApp it to Mum, so she can share it with the rest of the family!

We said this was an engagement timeline, and the party is one of the most exciting parts! There are of course many things that need to be decided and prepared for following a proposal, but we’re not focusing on those today! We’re worried about having fun, relaxing, and enjoying being engaged!
Do you want to plan it all yourself? Or would you rather your friends throw you a surprise? Do you want it casual, or extravagant? Decide on the vibe early, discuss it with your future bridesmaids and then plan something that feels right for you, and your relationship.
This should probably come before the engagement party, but who knows when parties will be taken away from us again, so we moved them up a bit! But this stage is critical, and you should decide early on how many bridesmaids or groomsmen you want by your side. Because they’ll play a key part in your wedding and engagement planning.
Do you want strict even numbers of grooms and maids on both sides? Or are you happy with an odd number? Will you have just friends? Or does his or her sister make the cut because they’re family?
The bridesmaids you pick will be emotionally carrying you to the altar over the next 12 months, so choose with your heart, and your head.

You’ve said ‘yes’ to your beloved, and now it’s time to pop the BIG question to your bridesmaids! These girls (and guys) have (nearly) always been there for you, and they’ve always been there. So now it’s time to show them some love back.
Give them a proposal surprise that lets them know you care, and that you want them there on your wedding day, by your side. Something personalised is always appreciated, and some kind keepsake of the moment would also be good.
The internet is full of resources that will show you how your engagement timeline should be. And your friends and family will always be happy to share their advice with you also. But occasionally, it’s important to take a step back, and remember why you are doing this. This isn’t a task, this is your wedding. So put some time aside in-between the wedding planning, and do some fun downtime things that you both enjoy. Or do something that’s just for you. Whatever it is, it’s good to relieve the stress that an intense engagement timeline can sometimes bring!
Long bridesmaid dresses are a classic wedding look with good reason. They are timeless, elegant, and contrary to some people’s belief, not boring – far from it actually!
Now, long bridesmaid dresses are being designed to suit all different wedding styles, from boho prettiness through to sculptural, city-appropriate chic and red-carpet glamour.
There is one thing you need to consider with long bridesmaid dresses, and that’s height. If you can try to choose a bridal party who are all exactly the same height, that will make your life easier! However, it’s more likely that you’ll need to adjust the hems to get the perfect fit for each person. You’ll also need to know whether they will be wearing heels or flats on the big day. As that’ll affect their height.
Speaking of shoes: if any of your bridesmaids is planning on a heel, suggest they practise walking in the full outfit ahead of the big day, to avoid any heel-to-hem tripping incidents.
Of course, not all long bridesmaid dresses are the same. That’s why we’ve put together our favourite styles available in-store at Nabbd right now. In the hope that we may inspire you and your girls to opt for long!

While a bridesmaids WhatsApp group is all about fun and laughter, it’s also important to set some ground rules to ensure a positive and respectful environment. Clearly communicate your expectations and encourage everyone to be supportive and inclusive. Remind your bridesmaids that the group is a space to share ideas, make plans, and offer support, and that negativity or drama is not appreciated.

A successful bridesmaids WhatsApp group is one where everyone feels comfortable and encouraged to participate. Make sure to create an inclusive environment where every bridesmaid’s voice is heard and valued.
Encourage the sharing of ideas, opinions, and suggestions. Make an effort to acknowledge and appreciate every contribution. This will not only keep the group dynamic and engaging, but also strengthen the bond between you and your bridesmaids.
To keep the wedding vibes going, it’s essential to keep the conversation naturally flowing in the bridesmaids WhatsApp group. Share updates on wedding preparations, ask for input on various decisions, and keep everyone informed about upcoming dates, appointments at bridesmaid dress shops and events.
But don’t limit the conversation to just wedding-related topics. Share funny anecdotes, interesting articles, or even a daily dose of inspiration. The more engaged and connected everyone feels, the more memorable the experience will be.

In addition to being a platform for communication, your bridesmaids WhatsApp group can also be a place to plan and organize fun activities. From bridal showers to hen parties, use the group as a tool for coordinating and collecting ideas.
Create polls to gather people’s preferences, share Pinterest boards for inspiration, or maybe arrange a night together to keep the excitement going. The possibilities are endless, and the group can become a real source of anticipation for everyone involved.

The bridesmaids WhatsApp group is not just a platform for communication; it’s a space to keep the wedding vibes alive and create lasting memories. Here are some ways you can infuse the group with excitement and anticipation:
One of the best ways to keep the wedding vibes going in your WhatsApp group is by sharing photos, videos, and memories. From dress fittings to bridal showers, capture those special moments and share them with the group.
Doing this not only allows everyone to feel included in the wedding journey, but also creates a sense of excitement and anticipation. Encourage your bridesmaids to share their photos and videos as well, making the group a treasure trove of memories.
As bridesmaids, your role goes beyond just being there on the wedding day. You are there to support the bride and help make their wedding dreams come true. The bridesmaids WhatsApp group is an excellent tool for planning and coordinating these duties.
Use the group to assign tasks, share responsibilities, and keep everyone informed about any updates or changes. Trips to certain dedicated bridesmaid dress shops in South London, for example!
Keeping everyone on the same page will allow for smooth coordination leading up to the big day.
One of the most important aspects of a good bridesmaids WhatsApp group, is the sense of support and camaraderie it fosters. Use the group to uplift and encourage the bride, especially during stressful times. Share words of wisdom, offer advice, and be a listening ear when they need it. But don’t forget to support each other as well.
Celebrate each other’s accomplishments, offer words of encouragement, and be there for one another throughout the wedding journey. The group should be a safe space where everyone can lean on each other and share in the excitement and challenges that come with wedding planning.
