How Many Bridesmaids Should I Have?

How many bridesmaids, is too many maids?

Deciding how many bridesmaids you should have is not always an easy task. It’s up there with choosing exactly who you should have as your bridesmaids!

Choosing bridesmaids is a little like being captain of a sports team, and trying to decide who should feature in your squad. The pressure can be challenging. But be aware that just because you have numerous friends, and a large family, it doesn’t mean they all have to be by your side on the big day. There are so many other ways that everyone can be involved in.

real bridesmaids wedding day how many to have

If you’re currently struggling to decide on how many bridesmaids you should have, try to remember these simple rules.

How to Work Out How Many Bridesmaids You Should Have

1. There is no ‘correct’ number of bridesmaids

Don’t you just love that! When you’re looking for an easy answer, and someone says, ‘there’s no correct answer’. But in this case, it’s true. Your wedding doesn’t require a certain number of bridesmaids. You don’t have to choose an odd, even or round number of ‘maids to be correct. You just have to choose how many bridesmaids feels right for you, and the occasion.

2. Don’t feel pressured to have the same number of bridesmaids as groomsmen

You also don’t need to have a matching number of bridesmaids to groomsmen. The only time anyone might notice that one side has less than the other, is when it’s time for them to walk down the aisle. But your guests are really not going to be paying that much attention to it anyway. They’ll be sitting there fidgeting in anticipation, waiting for you to walk down the aisle!

If you feel like the groups may look uneven in the photos, ask the photographer to work out different setups and poses that’ll make the numbers feel more balanced. That way, it’s not just a straight line of people standing beside one another.

3. Just because someone chose you to be one of their bridesmaids, it doesn’t mean you have to return the favour

There’s no rule that states you have to select your bridesmaids based on who asked you to be a part of their bridal party. You also definitely don’t have to extend the invite to someone just because you stood by their side some years ago. If you’re still close with them, go for it! But if you haven’t spoken in a few years (or more) it’s going to be a little weird rekindling your friendship in the midst of wedding planning.

4. It’s of course OK to not have any bridesmaids, or to have ‘bridesmen’ instead

You don’t have to have any bridesmaids at all. Even without an official ‘bride tribe’ you can still have a banging hen party and invite all your best girls, and boys. Who may even be happier in the long run, seeing as you saved them from having to organise wedding stuff. Or, do you have a guy in your life that you can’t imagine leaving out? By all means, ask him to join your bridal party along with the rest of the ‘maids!

The 12 Types of Bridesmaid

No wedding party would be complete without this band of special ladies.

The Organised Bridesmaid

From timelines and spreadsheets to checklists and group chats, the organised one is the type of bridesmaid always on hand to keep everyone in agreement and make sure everything is going to plan. She’s a great asset to have, especially when it comes to the wedding day itself – she’ll give your wedding co-ordinator a run for her money.

The Party Animal

This is the bridesmaid whose night is never over. She is the lovable crazy lady in your squad who can guarantee a hen party to remember, if you can! No relaxed spa day for her, she’s already got connections at the best bars in Ibiza, and she’s on first name terms with all the promoters. Look to her when you want the reception dance floor filled. Just make sure you have someone sensible keeping an eye on her…

The Control Freak

We all have that one friend who is a bit of a control freak, you don’t? It might be you… The control freak bridesmaid can come in handy if you’re a pretty laid-back bride and need someone to pick up the slack. But if you’re hands-on, just make sure to keep her busy and give her a responsibility – that way she’s satisfied that her job is done correctly.

real bridesmaids

The Emotional One

From the very moment you gave her the news that you were engaged, she has been in floods. If you’re looking around your reception during your speech and can’t find anyone tearing up at the emotional bit, look to her, she’ll be sobbing on your Mum’s shoulder. She loves you and she just can’t control it, what a cutie.

The ‘Might-as-well-be’ My Sister, Bridesmaid

Whether you met at nursery or you held her hair back through years of university, this bridesmaid is the one who knows you the best. Her opinion is always priceless. If everything gets too much before, after or during your big day, this type of bridesmaid will make any stress disappear.

The Serial Bridesmaid

This girl is an expert, she’s been a bridesmaid more times than you’ve had wedding cake tastings, and she knows what’s what. She’ll make the perfect maid, using her vast experience to guide the other girls through the challenges ahead!

The Always Positive One

Too much positivity can be a little annoying sometimes (we are English after all!), but having a bridesmaid who is always happy about everything can really help to balance out any of the less enthusiastic members of your group. They’ll be sure to remind everyone just how special and fun it is to be a bridesmaid.

The Always Late Bridesmaid…

It doesn’t matter if it’s your ceremony rehearsal or that infamous first day at her new job, this bridesmaid always has an issue with turning up on time. But when she does show up, she brings the party, and she’s the most fun to be around. To solve the problem of lateness, just make sure you always give her a false start-time for bridesmaid duties, so when she turns up ‘late’, she’s actually on time. Pretty good right?! Again, if you don’t know what we’re talking about, it’s probably you.

The Fresh-from-a-break-up Bridesmaid

We’ve all been there. It’s unfortunate, however, this bridesmaid has had her heart broken whilst you are planning your wedding. As hard as it sounds and as hard as it is, you can’t let that stop you from enjoying your big day. Her future loved-up self wouldn’t want that anyway. Just make sure the other bridesmaids keep her away from the single groomsmen!

The Fashionista Bridesmaid

Having a fashionista as one of your best girls is good because she knows what’s hot and what’s not, but that also means they may be a bit feisty when it comes to their outfit choice. Make sure she is heavily involved in your bridesmaid choices and remember these days it’s OK to mix and match, so let her choose a dress she loves! I mean, that’s guaranteed a Nabbd anyway but still!

The Selfie-Obsessed

In the middle of trying on your wedding dress ready to show to the girls, you’ll spot this type of bridesmaid with her phone out angling to get a selfie with you in the background! She can’t stop herself! But her (many) pictures will make for some amazing mementos & guaranteed love on Instagram.

The Creme-da-la-Creme of Bridesmaid

You’ll have to thank this type of bridesmaid so much when the wedding is over. When you need space, she gives you space, when you need help, she helps, when you need wine, she brings you wine – she just knows it all and does everything with a smile!

It takes all sorts to make a world, and it takes all types of bridesmaid to make a wedding! And we wouldn’t have it any other way!

How to Prepare for a Bridesmaid Dress Fitting

Keeping an open mind and having fun with your girls is the main thing to remember during any bridesmaid dress fitting.

Once the bride or the bride’s squad have gotten an idea of the style, fabric, and colour they want for their gowns — it’s time to book a bridesmaid dress fitting! And we cannot wait for you to arrive! But before you brush off the cold, and enter our cosy bridesmaid studio, cuppa in hand. There are a few things to keep in mind if you are to get the most out of your pre-wedding experience.

Simple steps you and your girls should take that’ll ensure you find the best bridesmaid dresses for the big day.

Preparation for a Bridesmaid Dress Fitting

You may well need multiple bridesmaid dress fitting appointments, but with our handy tips, you’ll stride into every one like a seasoned pro.

1. Appropriate Underwear/undergarments

If you’re at a loss about what to wear to a bridesmaid dress fitting, start with the basics, underwear. Aim to wear the exact, or at least a similar style of undergarments to your bridesmaid fitting as you plan to wear on the wedding day.

As it’s difficult to know how certain dresses will fit, bring along a couple of different bra options, especially a strapless version, to see which one is the most comfortable and works best with your dress. Keep it understated and simple by sticking to seamless styles and nude tones, as (practically) nobody will want to see your leopard-print bra sticking out. If the gown has a low or open back, it may have cups sewn in, but bringing along bra variations will still be helpful.

Lyric by Jenny Yoo

2. Shoe Options

The bride may well ask you to pick out a special pair of shoes that’ll suit the style theme, or colour of the celebration, but for now, bring a few different shoe options to your bridesmaid fitting. Try to find shoes with a similar heel height to the ones you might wear on the big day, as this will determine the length of the gown. How much hemming needs to be done or, if you’re a bit taller, whether you’ll need extra length added to the dress. These things are all affected by heel height.

Not bringing a pair of shoes the same height as the ones you’re planning to wear can disrupt the fitting/s, as the seamstress won’t know what they are working towards.

3. Makeup

On the big day, you’ll be looking your very best, wearing an amount of makeup that makes you feel good, and having had your hair done probably by a professional. Keep this in mind when attending your bridesmaid dress fitting.

You’re certainly less likely to love the dress if you’ve just rolled out of bed and shown up for the fitting. Feeling a mess. We’ve all experienced trying on an outfit before going out, and it just not looking or feeling right before we put our shoes on, and have done our hair, the same applies. You’ll be in a lot more responsive state of mind and feel happier with yourself if you get ready ‘to go out’ to attend a bridesmaid fitting.

4. Jewellery

If the bride has gifted the bridal party with jewellery she wants her squad to wear on the big day, or if she has a specific vision for earrings, necklaces etc – bring the appropriate accessories to your bridesmaid dress fitting. It’ll help you visualize the full ensemble.

The other benefit is that the bride-to-be will be ecstatic knowing you’re on board with her bridesmaid accessory choices. Send selfies of the full look, jewellery and all, to get her seal of approval and earn massive bridesmaid brownie points!

5. Hair Accessories

Planning on wearing your hair up at the wedding? Bring a hair tie or clip to get a better idea of what the bridesmaid dress will look like paired with an up-do. This will also give you a better feel for how the neckline and the back of your gown will look on the day.

6. Bring Your Best Self

If the bride is present during the bridesmaid dress fitting, keep things positive. Even if you’re not madly in love with the dress you’re wearing (impossible at Nabbd btw!), consider the brides’ feelings first. Go in with an open mind and knowledge that you can add your own splash of personality to the dress with makeup, accessories & sass!

Find Out All the Bridesmaid Duties You Should Expect

Go Bridesmaid Dress Shopping

You’ll need to go bridal and bridesmaid shopping with the bride, and it’s likely this is one of the duties you’re most excited about. What colour will your look be? What style will the bridesmaids wear? It’s so much fun! Go wedding dress shopping is pretty great too!

The maid of honour’s role involves helping to arrange a day when everyone can get together to try bridesmaids dresses on. Try to be flexible, particularly when there’s a big group to organise.

Remember that it can be hard to dress and coordinate everyone at once, so if you have any concerns, address them calmly as soon as possible. Help the bride achieve her vision, and keep in mind that she always has the final word.

More importantly, you should make sure that you establish with the bride, from the beginning, who will pay for the gowns. Make sure you include any extras such as accessories, hair, and makeup, too.

Traditionally, the bride pays for what she wants the bridesmaids to wear, but this isn’t always the case, so make sure everyone’s on the same page to avoid any awkwardness.

Wedding Planning

Bridesmaids are often expected to help the bride with different parts of the wedding planning process. With different tasks handed out according to individual skills and talents.

If you’re good at crafts, the bridesmaids might ask you to help them with DIY wedding gifts, while those with a talent for design might be asked to lend a hand with stationery. There’s also RSVPs that need to be chased, menu options to be organised, and issues with wedding suppliers to be fixed.

Be prepared to help with any wedding admin – and do so with a smile. It’s all part of being a bridesmaid!

Plan the Hen Party

The maid of honour is usually in charge of organizing the hen party, but they may assign other tasks to you to help out. Prepare ideas to help the maid of honour plan the perfect day, and consider what things you can do to help with the hen do planning.

One bridesmaid could gather some hen party challenges for everyone to try, while others could contact the groom to get the Mr and Mrs Quiz answers – a hen party essential!

Games offer a great way of breaking the ice if you have a large group of bridesmaids who don’t all know each other well.

Get Ready with the Bride

If you aren’t already with the bride on the morning of the wedding, go over to her hotel and assist her in getting ready. While the maid of honour attends to the bride, the adult bridesmaids can assist any younger bridesmaids and flower girls.

Bridesmaids typically travel to the wedding ceremony with the maid of honour and the bride’s mother, leaving the bride to travel with her father. The bridesmaids should arrive ten minutes before the bride so that they can see her arrive.

Host & Help at the Reception

During the wedding reception, the bridesmaids should be available to assist with anything the bride may need. From makeup touch-ups, to assistance going to the bathroom, and taking charge of the emergency bag.

Keep an eye out to make sure the bride has something to drink (non-booze) and has eaten properly as the evening progresses.

An Engagement Timeline For You & Your Bridesmaids

To help your big day plans go as smoothly as possible, we thought we’d share our top tips for newly engaged couples. Bite-size pieces of wedding planning cake that will help to make the process more manageable, and more fun for you and your bridesmaids.

Check Your Nails

How are most people going to hear about your engagement? Social media. And how will you tell people that you’re engaged? By showing your engagement ring! Now, how’s it going to look if you share an image of your ring finger with cracked nail polish, or chipped ends? It’s going to look awful. Even if you don’t think so now, trust us, in 5–10 years time you’ll wish you’d got a manicure.

Post an Engagement Ring Selfie

This engagement ring selfie is probably going to be the biggest thing you’ve posted on Instagram to date. So make sure it’s precisely how you want it. A relaxed, loving shot of you and your partner is what we’re going for.

Once you’ve shared it with your adoring fans, WhatsApp it to Mum, so she can share it with the rest of the family!

Plan an Engagement Party

We said this was an engagement timeline, and the party is one of the most exciting parts! There are of course many things that need to be decided and prepared for following a proposal, but we’re not focusing on those today! We’re worried about having fun, relaxing, and enjoying being engaged!

Do you want to plan it all yourself? Or would you rather your friends throw you a surprise? Do you want it casual, or extravagant? Decide on the vibe early, discuss it with your future bridesmaids and then plan something that feels right for you, and your relationship.

Choose Your Bridesmaids

This should probably come before the engagement party, but who knows when parties will be taken away from us again, so we moved them up a bit! But this stage is critical, and you should decide early on how many bridesmaids or groomsmen you want by your side. Because they’ll play a key part in your wedding and engagement planning.

Do you want strict even numbers of grooms and maids on both sides? Or are you happy with an odd number? Will you have just friends? Or does his or her sister make the cut because they’re family?

The bridesmaids you pick will be emotionally carrying you to the altar over the next 12 months, so choose with your heart, and your head.

Will You Be My Bridesmaid?

You’ve said ‘yes’ to your beloved, and now it’s time to pop the BIG question to your bridesmaids! These girls (and guys) have (nearly) always been there for you, and they’ve always been there. So now it’s time to show them some love back.

Give them a proposal surprise that lets them know you care, and that you want them there on your wedding day, by your side. Something personalised is always appreciated, and some kind keepsake of the moment would also be good.

Take a Breath During Your Engagement Timeline

The internet is full of resources that will show you how your engagement timeline should be. And your friends and family will always be happy to share their advice with you also. But occasionally, it’s important to take a step back, and remember why you are doing this. This isn’t a task, this is your wedding. So put some time aside in-between the wedding planning, and do some fun downtime things that you both enjoy. Or do something that’s just for you. Whatever it is, it’s good to relieve the stress that an intense engagement timeline can sometimes bring!

A successful bridesmaids WhatsApp group is one where everyone feels comfortable and encouraged to participate. Make sure to create an inclusive environment where every bridesmaid’s voice is heard and valued.

Encourage the sharing of ideas, opinions, and suggestions. Make an effort to acknowledge and appreciate every contribution. This will not only keep the group dynamic and engaging, but also strengthen the bond between you and your bridesmaids.

Keep the Conversation Flowing

To keep the wedding vibes going, it’s essential to keep the conversation naturally flowing in the bridesmaids WhatsApp group. Share updates on wedding preparations, ask for input on various decisions, and keep everyone informed about upcoming dates, appointments at bridesmaid dress shops and events.

But don’t limit the conversation to just wedding-related topics. Share funny anecdotes, interesting articles, or even a daily dose of inspiration. The more engaged and connected everyone feels, the more memorable the experience will be.

How to Keep the Wedding Vibes Going in the WhatsApp Group

The bridesmaids WhatsApp group is not just a platform for communication; it’s a space to keep the wedding vibes alive and create lasting memories. Here are some ways you can infuse the group with excitement and anticipation:

Share Photos, Videos, and Memories

One of the best ways to keep the wedding vibes going in your WhatsApp group is by sharing photos, videos, and memories. From dress fittings to bridal showers, capture those special moments and share them with the group.

Doing this not only allows everyone to feel included in the wedding journey, but also creates a sense of excitement and anticipation. Encourage your bridesmaids to share their photos and videos as well, making the group a treasure trove of memories.

Plan and Coordinate Bridesmaids’ Duties

As bridesmaids, your role goes beyond just being there on the wedding day. You are there to support the bride and help make their wedding dreams come true. The bridesmaids WhatsApp group is an excellent tool for planning and coordinating these duties.

Use the group to assign tasks, share responsibilities, and keep everyone informed about any updates or changes. Trips to certain dedicated bridesmaid dress shops in South London, for example!

Keeping everyone on the same page will allow for smooth coordination leading up to the big day.

Support the Bride and Each Other

One of the most important aspects of a good bridesmaids WhatsApp group, is the sense of support and camaraderie it fosters. Use the group to uplift and encourage the bride, especially during stressful times. Share words of wisdom, offer advice, and be a listening ear when they need it. But don’t forget to support each other as well.

Celebrate each other’s accomplishments, offer words of encouragement, and be there for one another throughout the wedding journey. The group should be a safe space where everyone can lean on each other and share in the excitement and challenges that come with wedding planning.

7 Colours with Secret Meanings to Include in Your Wedding Colour Scheme

Are you trying to determine the best wedding colour scheme for your big day? If so, it may help you to understand the meaning of the colours you’re considering.

From deep jewellery tones that reflect wealth and aristocracy, to soft colours that evoke whimsy and romance, the following tones are the most common wedding colour scheme choices, matched with their hidden meanings.

Mira by Amsale

The Secret Meanings Behind Your Wedding Colour Scheme

Red

Passion, Love, Drama, Energy, Dominance

Meaning: Red has different meanings in various countries. In America, it can symbolize love, anger, and courage, while in China, it represents luck and prosperity.

Research shows that red can ignite desire, increase your heart rate and make you more excited. Therefore, you could choose to dial up the romance by picking a bold and vibrant red colour scheme, or tone it down with a beautiful burgundy or crimson.

Popular Wedding Colour Combinations: Cherry Red + Black, Cardinal Red + Grey, Burgundy + Gold, Crimson + Light Brown.

How to Style: Red is a bold colour that typically looks best as an accent. For the main colours, select a sophisticated dark grey or play up the drama with black and gold.

Pink

Soft, Sweet, Feminine, Romance

Meaning: Pink is often associated with femininity. However, this attitude is a rather modern concept. In fact, pink was once associated with masculinity because it was related to red, a colour that signifies dominance and passion. It wasn’t until the 20th century that people decided to make pink a more suitable colour for girls. Regardless of gender roles, pink now signifies young love, sensitivity, and vulnerability.

Its various shades (fuchsia, rose, coral, magenta) are some of the most common colours used in weddings today.

Popular Wedding Colour Combinations: Coral + Mint, Dusty Pink + Ivory, Carnation + Magenta, Light Pink + Navy Blue, Light Pink + Grey.

How to Style: Blush and blue weddings are super trendy right now and will make your entire bridal party look spectacular. Outfit the grooms in navy suits with pink accents, and opt for bridesmaid dresses in romantic dusty rose to make your wedding photos pop.

Blue

Tranquil, Balance, Serenity, Sadness

Meaning: Blue is known for being a calming colour. In fact, research proves that the colour blue puts us in a meditative state because it reminds us of water, which contributes to our sense of well-being.

Blue is also the colour of trust, which is why many businesses use blue in their corporate logos. The ‘something blue’ part of the wedding tradition stems from the belief that blue represented love, fidelity, and trust.

Popular Wedding Colour Combinations: Navy + Cranberry, Pale Blue + Ivory, Light Blue + Yellow, Cerulean + Sage.

How to Style: From a stunning pair of blue heels to a simple cobalt blue sash, there are plenty of ways to carry on the ‘something blue’ tradition. If you want blue to be part of your wedding colour scheme, there are endless options.

Make guests feel like they’re in a true winter wonderland by pairing light blue with silver and having fun with your wedding treat table. From snowflake-themed wedding pops to an elegant pale blue cake dripping in gold, this colour combo provides endless opportunities for cold-weather brides.

Purple

Royalty, Luxury, Power, Mystery

Meaning: Purple is associated with wealth and opulence. Once worn exclusively by nobility, purple was often used to convey one’s status in society, so you could make your ladies look like royalty in purple bridesmaid dresses. Although darker shades of purple still signify luxury and power, lighter shades of purple can provoke a sense of elegance, whimsy and magic. Its many associations make it one of the more popular wedding colour choices for modern brides.

Popular Wedding Colour Combinations: Lilac + Sage, Plum + Gold, Deep Purple + Light Grey, Lavender + Yellow, Mulberry + Orchid + Yellow.

How to Style: With the right wedding colour scheme, you can use purple any time of the year. Pair darker hues with gold for a glamorous autumn or winter wedding, or combine a lighter shade of purple with ivory or sage for a whimsical, romantic feel. Purple flowers are absolutely stunning and pop against white backgrounds. Take advantage of these beautiful blooms by using them not only as bouquets, but also as centrepieces for your tables.

Orange

Excitement, Youth, Warmth

Meaning: Orange is a colour that signifies youth, vitality, and generosity.

Popular Wedding Colour Combinations: Tangerine + Yellow, Orange + Cranberry + Yellow, Apricot + Sage, Orange + Teal + Gold.

How to Style: Orange is a difficult colour to pull off in winter. However, it’s the perfect hue for spring, summer and especially autumn weddings.

If you’re going for a Boho vibe, opt for a colour palette of burnt orange, dusty pink and brown. These lovely hues come together elegantly for both the bride and the groom. Mixing and matching orange bridesmaid dresses in various hues can also create some really fun combinations.

Yellow

Happiness, Positivity, Curiosity, Imagination

Meaning: Similar to orange, yellow evokes energy and happiness. It also signifies curiosity and imagination, making it perfect for creative couples who enjoy learning and exploring.

Popular Wedding Colour Combinations: Canary Yellow + Light Blue, Amber + Marigold + Navy, Yellow + Coral, Emerald + Cream + Gold, Yellow + Lilac, Yellow + Mint + Ivory.

How to Style: Although yellow is primarily associated with summer weddings, various shades can be adopted for autumn and winter. Golden hues bring warmth to autumn and winter affairs, while lighter shades such as canary can brighten up summer and spring weddings.

Green

Health, Growth, Bounty

Meaning: Green is most commonly associated with wealth and money. However, it’s also the colour of nature, representing life and growth. Although there are some negative connotations associated with the colour green, like envy and jealousy, it’s often used by brides to signify their love of nature and the outdoors. Brides who want green to signify wealth should choose darker, rich shades of green, while brides who want to evoke a natural sense of wonder should opt for bright-green hues.

Popular Wedding Colour Combinations: Emerald + Gold, Lime Green + Navy + Cobalt, Sage Green + Light Pink, Mint + Light Blue + Ivory, Olive + Ivory, Sage + Dusty Pink + Navy.

How to Style: If you’re going for the nature vibe, take advantage of natural foliage in your wedding décor. Drape wedding garland down long tables and use hanging plants above the lights for a venue decked out in gorgeous greenery.

Of course, not every couple is going to select a wedding colour theme based on its hidden meaning alone. There are so many other factors to consider, including the season, time of day and your location.

Still, it’s helpful to know what each colour represents. By knowing the secret meaning behind each one, you can choose a wedding colour scheme that perfectly reflects you both.

What to Do After Accepting a Bridesmaid Proposal

You said ‘Yes’ to the Bridesmaid Proposal! Now what…?

As soon as your bestie got engaged, you knew this day was coming. It was only a matter of time before a lovely little gift box showed up at your door, asking you to be her bridesmaid. If this is your first time being someone’s bridesmaid, you’re probably now wondering what’s next after the proposal?

what to do after bridesmaids proposal real wedding

There are of course no hard and fast rules on what you should do after receiving a bridesmaid proposal. That being said, there are a few things you probably should do.

Think Carefully Before You Say Yes to the Bridesmaid Proposal

Once you’ve received a bridesmaid proposal, the first thing you’ll likely want to do, is say yes. It’s your best mate, of course you want to be there on her big day! But don’t rush to accept without consideration.

Before you call her and accept the proposal, consider all the roles and responsibilities that go along with being a bridesmaid, and think about the commitment you’ll be making. Do you have any other major life events that could coincide with her hen party, bridal shower or the actual wedding?

Avoid being in a situation that requires you to choose between the birth of your nephew (for example), over your best friend’s wedding. If there is any reason you may not be present for some of her events, you need to give her a heads-up whenever you’re able.

Let Her Know How Much It Means to You

Now that you’ve thought everything through, you can then go ahead and agree to be her bridesmaid with enthusiasm and excitement. Call her up and tell her how honoured you are to be her bridesmaid, and how grateful you are for the proposal. You could also send a heartfelt note telling her how excited you are for the big day, and the journey to get there.

If you have any concerns about your bridesmaid duties, now is the time to bring them up. She’s probably knee-deep in wedding planning already. The sooner you let her know your concerns, the easier it will be for her to plan around any potential issues.

Post the Bridesmaid Proposal on Social Media

If your best girl went all out and sent you a bridesmaid gift box filled with goodies, show her some love on social media. Whether she made the gift box herself or bought it, your friend deserves some recognition for a wonderful proposal.

Block Off Time in Your Calendar

Although the bride may not know specific dates for pre-wedding events, she should have a general idea of when the wedding day will be. This will probably be included in your bridesmaid proposal, but if not, find out the wedding date from the bride and mark it off your calendar as soon as possible.

While you can’t completely plan for events that haven’t happened yet, it’s helpful if the bride knows the month in which specific events are likely to happen. For example, if you know that the hen party is in March, you can try to avoid scheduling anything on the weekends during the entire month.

Say Hello to the Other Bridesmaids and Introduce Yourself

There is a good chance you will not know some of the other bridesmaids. So, before any of the festivities commence, why not get their numbers and set up a WhatsApp group together. You’ll be working closely with these girls & boys to plan the bride’s hen party and help with the wedding planning process, so it’ll be good to get to know each other first.

This strategy will also give you an idea of how each bridesmaid will be contributing. If one bridesmaid lives further away, it makes sense to give her tasks that aren’t location-specific.

Get Ready for Unforgettable Moments

Being a bridesmaid is a huge honour and privilege. It’s also a massive commitment of your time and sometimes money.

Still, you wouldn’t dream of being anywhere but by the bride’s side on her wedding day. By planning early and jumping into your role as a bridesmaid, both your wallet and your best friend will be grateful.

Now you’ve accepted the big bridesmaid proposal, it’s time to select your dresses! Book your appointment today at Nabbd and find a gown together that you love!

How to Write a Maid of Honour Speech

You organise her hen party, find her the perfect wedding dress and set up a hugely successful bridesmaids WhatsApp group. And now she wants you to deliver a speech?!

The maid of honour speech is a fairly modern tradition, but one we are so in favour of! Why should it just be the men who do all the toasting, we have plenty of people to thank and congratulate too! However, if your personality is on the shy side, the thought of delivering a maid of honour speech maybe one of the less exciting duties given to you. That’s fair. It’s a big moment, one that involves you standing up in front of a room full of people and, talking. That’s not easy! Especially when you’re expected to sum up how much you love your best mate, congratulate them and say thank you to everyone attending – all within 2-3 mins! Pressure!

But don’t worry, these days there’s no need to write your maid of honour speech alone. There’s a whole digital world out there ready and waiting to help you.

abby jenny yoo bridesmaids maid of honour dress

The maid of honour speech should be a doddle if you’re comfortable speaking in front of a crowd, or passed your drama AS level with flying colours. However, even if giving the speech isn’t a concern for you, figuring out what to write a maid of honour toast about is. It’s a big occasion for both you and the bride, one that should be memorable for all the right reasons.

How to Write a Maid of Honour Speech

How to prepare the best maid of honour speech a bride has ever heard, and deal with your nerves? We’ve got you bridesmaids!

Begin Talking About Your Bride, and End By Speaking About the Couple

You are blessed with all the insight into how much your best mate’s spouse has transformed them for the better. So share that with the wedding guests.

Your maid of honour speech should begin by referencing the friend you knew long before they meet their soulmate. Before moving onto how their role has affected your lives, for the better. Perhaps your friend is funnier today, more adventurous, or simply just happy. Compliment the (always will be) new member of your friendship group, and share how their relationship has made them both better people.

Tell a Story, a Short One

Nothing proves a point better than a personal anecdote. When writing your maid of honour speech, try to think of certain times during your friendship that show just how amazing your bride is. And try to make it coherent within the whole of your speech.

By telling personal stories from your time together, you’ll avoid sharing tired clichés, and instead illustrate just how good a friend they actually are.

bridesmaids toasting with bride

Keep it Light

Don’t mention any exes (however amazing you thought they were), avoid personal tragedies, and try not to roast your friend. It can seem tempting to really use this opportunity to have a laugh at your mate’s expense, but this isn’t the time. Keep things positive, light and overwhelmingly loving!

And Short!

This is not a Shakespearean soliloquy, and right now, the world is not your stage. This is your maid of honour speech, and you need to fit your talking time in with everyone else’s. You’re one of many people giving a speech this afternoon, and you need to fit within the schedule.

If you’re comfortable with public speaking, then you’ll want to talk and talk. But your confidence in yourself doesn’t mean the gathered guests want to hear you. They’ll soon lose interest if each toast lasts longer than 5 minutes.

Aim for 3 minutes, that should allow enough time for laughter pauses and maybe the odd ad-lib.

Practice Your Maid of Honour Speech!

Don’t wing it, please. Practice your maid of honour speech in the weeks leading up to the wedding as many times as possible. Read it in front of the mirror, record yourself reciting it, and get your friends to listen to it.

There’s no need to know if off by heart, but you should feel comfortable just glancing at keywords or phrases on cue cards. The more you rehearse, the more likely you’ll nail every funny anecdote and encourage even more tears from your bride!

Show Your Bridesmaids Some Love on Your Big Day

5 Ways to Show Your Bridesmaids Some Love on Your Big Day

Here are some ideas on how to celebrate your bridesmaids on your wedding day

As a bride-to-be, it goes without saying that you love and adore each of your bridesmaids. After all, you’ve asked them to be by your side on one of the most important of days. Therefore, they must be pretty special to receive such an honour!

A true honour it may be, but your bridesmaids deserve that little bit more. A special something that will make them feel loved and appreciated. They deserve it after all! They haven’t just comforted you during your bridezilla breakdowns leading up to the big day, they’ve been there through thick and thin for years. Teary break-ups and drunken upsets, through to endless lockdown quizzes and holding hair back Friday nights. These girls have loved you throughout, so why not show your appreciation for each of your bridesmaids on your wedding day?

It doesn’t have to be anything grand, in fact, it’s the little things that can make the big difference. Stuck for ideas? We thought we’d round up our favourite ways to shower your bridesmaids with your love below.

Top Ways to Show Some Love to Your Top Girls

Let Them Pick Their Dresses

All of your bridesmaids want and deserve to feel amazing on your big day. By giving them the gift of choosing their bridesmaids dress, you’ll be letting them express their own personal style, and a shape they know flatters them most.

Don’t panic though, you don’t need to give up full control of what your bridesmaids are going to wear. All you need to do is set a few parameters for them to work within. Get it right, and you’ll achieve the modern, cohesive wedding party look we all dream of.

For example, pick an exact bridesmaids colour and ask your girls to select a dress in that colour. Or choose a palette, and let them select a dress within that range. Conversely, you could decide on a length and let them do the rest.

If your bridesmaids can’t agree on a dress style that is flattering, don’t worry, that’s what the Nabbd girls are here for!

Give Them Unique Gifts

Bridesmaid gifts are part and parcel of the wedding party experience. While there is nothing wrong with getting them wedding day accessories and other traditional bridesmaid gifts, it also helps to throw in something unique to each of your girls.

For example, why not make your bridesmaids a personal photo album documenting your most special moments together? This heartfelt bridesmaid gift idea is guaranteed to tug on some heartstrings!

See more sweet gifts for your bridesmaids here.

Say a Few Words When You Pop the Champagne

The moment your maid of honour pops the morning bottle of bubbly, it’s time to relax, get the tunes on and prepare for the big day! But before you get the party started, gather your bridesmaids around and clink a few glasses in celebration.

This is the best moment to say a few pre-prepared words or off-the-cuff feelings that show your appreciation to these special gals! Doesn’t need to be long, they’ll probably get a bigger shout out during the reception. These words are just for you guys, private thoughts that show just how much you care.

It may be a small gesture, but it reminds them of just how grateful you are to have them by your side. Plus, it’s a lovely, and loving way to kick off the day’s proceedings.

Write a Letter to Each Bridesmaid on Your Wedding Day

If you’ve ever received a thoughtful, personalised letter before, you know just how much of an impact it can make. Penning a heart-warming note to each of your bridesmaids is the type of gesture each of them is sure to cherish.

On top of saying your thanks, be sure to include things that are specific to each of them. Did one of your bridesmaids help you with a particular crisis? Mention it, and tell her how thankful you are that they were there for you.

Make it clear that you appreciate the little things more than they can possibly know. Just get the tissues ready in case they aren’t expecting you to get so sentimental!

Make Your Maid of Honour Feel Extra Special

Whether she’s your sister or best friend since school, your maid of honour is one-of-a-kind. She’s taken on some of the most important roles, from bringing your bridesmaids into order, to planning your hen party in lockdown, via Zoom! She is a super-hero and definitely deserves the recognition.

One way to make her shine on your big day is by dressing her in a different bridesmaid dress than the rest of your bridal party. Have your maid of honour wear a floral printed bridesmaid dress for example or a sparkly sequinned bridesmaids dress while the rest of your gang wears a coordinating shade. Or, you could have your maid of honour wear a long style while your other bridesmaids opt for shorter bridesmaids dresses.

You could also make her feel extra special by giving her a personalised necklace or by treating her to a much-needed spa day following the wedding. No matter what the gift, make sure it matches all that she’s done for you during wedding preparation.

Discover the Bridesmaid Dress Trends of 2023

Your bridesmaids will look and feel their confident best with these fresh, flattering trends to suit all different personal styles.

Wedding shopping can (and should be!) so much fun, particularly when you have the biggest bridesmaid dress trends of 2023 to choose from.

In 2023, it’s by no means a given that all of your bridesmaids will wear the same dress. Not even the same colour. Not even the same length! It’s a coordinated free-for-all! While going for a traditional ‘same style look’, does create a cohesive overall feel, you need to be quite lucky to find that magic dress that suits everyone’s figures and personalities. It’s perfectly acceptable to have them in mismatched bridesmaid dresses, linked by a common theme.

Bridesmaid try-on sessions are simply a must, even if your sister lives in Aberdeen and your best mate lives in Marbella – set up a girls group chat and agree on your options to order. Then schedule an evening Zoom call and enjoy a fashion show of the biggest bridesmaid trends of 2023! Our forecast brings you the very best of big wedding fashion, which you can then adapt to suit your girls’ individual styles.

The Biggest Bridesmaid Dress Trends of 2023

Ruffles

Ruffles are going to be even bigger in 2021 – in terms of both size and popularity. If you want a romantic bridesmaid look, choose floral ruffles. For something edgier, go for a single colour, or a colour block for extra fashion points.

Sleek Styles

The sleek bridesmaid dress is set to be one of the major trends in 2023. If you want your bridesmaids to look and feel super elegant, a little sassy and be gifted a style to wear again and again – this trend is for you.

Luxe-Touch Fabrics

Since the pandemic, comfort has risen up the fashion agenda, and is still set to play a key part in bridesmaid dress trends for 2023. We’re not talking about maids in ‘athleisure’, this trend is all about the fabrics and how they feel against the skin. From butter-soft silks and satins to sumptuous velvet, the key word is ‘strokeable’.

The New Boho Bridesmaids

Boho is a firm wedding favourite, for both décor and outfits. It’s a multi-faceted look, bringing in elements of ’70s style, natural fabrics, flowing silhouettes and jewelled touches. For 2023, the folk element of Boho is going to be dialled up, as seen on the catwalk at Chloé. We’re talking white with bright patterns, embroidery and tassels.

Bridesmaid Biker Jackets

As seen on the Dior and Fendi catwalks, bridesmaid biker jackets are set to be big fashion news. A leather jacket is a great way to add edge to a floaty bridesmaid dress, as well as co-ordinating the overall look.

The Joy of Nature

The great outdoors will certainly be embraced next year, with people still enjoying the delights discovered in the English countryside during Covid. Expect 2023 fashion to reflect this, with a mood that celebrates all that nature brings us – think exuberant florals, fruit-based prints and juicy hues.

Silver Bridesmaids

Fashion writers are predicting silver will be the metallic of 2023. This is good news for bridesmaids because it’s a suit-everyone hue that can look glamorous, pretty or pared-back, depending on the style you choose.

Red Bridesmaid Dresses

Next year, expect to see red mixed into different patterns and put against other hues for a soft yet still powerful look. It’s a lucky colour in many cultures, and we think it’ll bring your girls joy in 2023.

7 Fun Bridesmaids Ideas for the Wedding Morning

If you want to make a bit of a fuss over the bride or bridesmaids on the morning of the wedding, these fun little things will certainly start the day in the right way.

It’s so easy for the first few hours of your wedding day to fly by without even noticing. Hell, the whole wedding can swish past you if you’re not careful! And before you know it, you’re off on your honeymoon. That is why it’s important to really shine a light on your wedding morning, and give it the focus it deserves. Because if you appreciate those fleeting moments with your bridesmaids whilst getting ready, you’ll better appreciate the rest of the day.

bridesmaids in red on wedding morning

On the morning of your wedding, do you really want to be spending that precious time working through checklists and anxiously watching the clock? Getting ready with your bridesmaids should be as memorable as the main event and filled with laughter, prosecco (not too much) and sharing stories.

Here are 7 fun things to do on your wedding morning with your bridesmaids.

Prepare coordinated ‘get ready’ robes for your bridal party

We think it’s so fun when a bride and her bridesmaids have coordinating pyjamas or robes to get ready in! It makes everyone feel like even more of a squad, and it looks great in the wedding photos. Robes also won’t spoil your hair and makeup when it’s time to change into your bridesmaids dresses.

Plan a Sleepover

Is there any better way to spend the last night of your single life, than sharing a few laughs over a cheeky bottle of wine with your mates? Book somewhere to stay with your bridesmaids before the wedding, so you have plenty of time to catch up and relax. This is equally a good time to pamper and do any beauty treatments you and the bridal party feel like doing.

Co-create a Playlist

It’s not a real party without a killer playlist. Pumping the tunes you all love during wedding prep will create a great atmosphere and get everyone in a celebratory mood! Create a group playlist on Spotify, and together you’ll guarantee all bridesmaids will be happy, and free from pre-wedding nerves.

Eat a Wedding Morning Meal

On the morning of your wedding, you might not feel like eating much, but it’s vital you do eat something! Sit down together for a healthy breakfast and set up a grazing station to keep everyone’s energy levels up throughout your time together.

Capture the moment

Wedding morning selfies with your bridesmaids are always so sweet to look back on. But don’t forget to allow time for professional photos too! Your hair, makeup, and flowers will all be at their best at the start of the day, so plan for some bridal party portraits with your photographer before you hit the aisle.

Decorate the space

Why not bring some fun little details to your wedding morning! Big balloons, decorations and even flower arrangements can bring some cheer to an otherwise average room. And, it’ll make your bridal party feel appreciated and loved.

A First Look with Your Bridesmaids

If you’re doing the whole first look thing with your partner, why not do it with your bridesmaids! This wedding day is a big deal for your closest friends too, so it makes sense that you would want to have a special moment with them. Be sure to have your photographer on standby to catch their reaction, and you’ll capture a precious memory that each of you will love long after the big day.
